Planting

Drilling
  • All crops are drilled for a target market with target growing densities ranging from 50 to 100 plants per m2
  • Crops usually follow poppies, with grass, potatoes, peas and cereals typically also in the rotation
  • Crops are grown on a minimum 5 year rotation, most growers have at least 8 years between crops
  • Drilling of "early" cream gold crops takes place in May
  • "Regular" cream gold type crops commences in Mid July and completes mid September
  • Red onions are drilled in July and August
  • Hybrid types are drilled in September
  • Growers prepare paddocks for drilling under the FFT staff instruction
  • FFT carry out all the drilling mostly using 3 bed wide precision drills on a 1.83m wheel track
